Living Gluten Free and Still Eating Pizza
A gluten-free lifestyle comes with some sacrifices, but when it comes to pizza, the powers that be have found ways to give us that nostalgic, blissful pizza pie feeling without the sinking, unwell feeling that follows. Manufacturers have swapped out wheat flour for creative ingredients like cauliflower, chickpeas, corn and rice, making pizza options for every type of gluten-free eater, and for that, we are eternally grateful.
Gluten Free Frozen Pizza Options
Gone are the days where we were worried about cross-contamination in our local pizza kitchens. Now, frozen-food brands both large and small are taking on the biggest challenge yet: gluten-free frozen pizza.
Against the Grain Gourmet.
Against the Grain Gourmet makes both ready-made pizzas and gluten-free crusts, which have cheese baked into the dough. The crispy crust is made of tapioca starch, milk and eggs, which means it’s free from corn, rice and soy. They also have a gluten-free facility that is regularly tested to ensure there is no gluten up in here. Choose from 10-inch and 12-inch pizzas including options like bacon and onion, pesto, uncured pepperoni, three cheese and cheesy jalapeno as well as vegan pies including cheddar-style and veggie.
Amy’s.
Amy’s is internationally known for its gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan dishes, so it’s only natural that they came out with a pizza line that honors their roots. Offering both single-serve and whole pizza sizes, Amy’s offers a ton of pizza flavors including four cheese, cheese, spinach, margherita as well as meatless pepperoni and vegan pesto with roasted artichoke. Note that the cheese substitute does contain soy, which may be restrictive for some, but the pizza itself contains rice flour, potatoes and tapioca flour to make it gluten-free.
Banza.
Banza is the absolute standard when it comes to gluten-free eating. Certified by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), they use only chickpeas to build their delicious crust. They are a gluten-free facility that offers vegetarian options including supreme, margherita and roasted veggie as well as vegan like plant-based cheese.
California Pizza Kitchen.
California Pizza Kitchen, or CPK as it’s affectionately known, is a major player in the frozen pizza industry, so it’s a real delight to know they’re looking out for our gluten-intolerant friends. They offer gluten-free pizza crusts made with cauliflower, chickpeas and a traditional gluten-free blend of tapioca starch, rice starch, potato starch and potato flour. Toppings include margherita, cheese, BBQ chicken, uncured pepperoni and a pepperoni with sausage and mushroom.
CAULIPOWER.
Caulipower focuses exclusively on gluten-free products like cauliflower crust pizza made with cauliflower rather than a blend of other ingredients, so you know for sure that it is 100% gluten-free and approved for those who have celiac disease. You will occasionally find brown rice flour, white rice flour and tapioca starch as additives to bind the crust, but you are otherwise free of other gluten-fearing toppings. Caulipower offers distinct flavors like pepperoni, turkey pepperoni, Italian sausage with vegetables, sriracha veggie (!), buffalo chicken, three cheese and margherita.
Conte’s.
Conte’s, more specifically known as Conte’s Pasta Company, makes frozen pizza crusts with rice flour and is a gluten-free certified organization. Its facilities offer a range of GFCO-certified products, but the star here is their pre-baked crispy pizza shell that you can add your own toppings to. With three flavors to choose from, including margherita, pepperoni and mushroom florentine, the New Jersey-based brand cleverly packages the pizza so you can put it directly in the oven and bake in an unopened bag.
Daiya.
Daiya is the Queen of dairy-free foods, so it’s not surprising that they extended their offerings to include both gluten and dairy-free pizzas. The plant-based food company is committed to allergies, regularly testing their facilities and ensuring equipment is cleaned and up-to-code. There are lots of fun varieties to choose from, including margherita, cheese lovers, fire-roasted vegetable and mushroom with roasted garlic as well as meatless pepperoni, meatless supreme and meatless meat lover’s.
DiGiorno.
DiGiorno is definitely the most well-known frozen pizza brand, so it’s a real thrill that they’re entering into gluten-free frozen pizza territory. That said, it’s very important to note that while their pizza is technically certified gluten-free, their pizzas do contain wheat starch, which is a big no-no for our ultra-sensitive folks. If you’re just looking for something that eases up on the gluten, DiGiorno offers four cheese and uncured pepperoni that’s cleared of its gluten proteins during a “rinsing process.” Tread lightly!
Freschetta.
Freschetta is another fan favorite when it comes to frozen pizza, and their line of gluten-free options are government-certified. Take in the tasty four cheese with parmesan, pepperoni or spinach and roasted mushroom while knowing your belly is safe with Freschetta gluten-free.
Life Cuisine.
Life Cuisine is another frozen pizza brand brought to you by the same folks who brought you DiGiorno. These products are meant to adhere to your gluten-free lifestyle, so are made with cauliflower crust and rice flour. The company uses real cheese to make specialty pizzas like three cheese, three meat and pepperoni.
Three Bakers.
Three Bakers, the purveyors of thin-crust, offer gluten-free pizzas made with rice flour and tapioca starch. Their traditional flavors of cheese, sausage and pepperoni, are all topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and spices. These pies are certified by the Gluten Intolerance Group and pass as gluten-free with flying colors.
Udi’s.
Udi’s Gluten Free has gluten-free in its brand name, so you know it’s the real thing. All frozen pizzas come with a sweet potato crust that contains other ingredients like tapioca and brown rice flour. The gluten-free flavors include four cheese, pepperoni, supreme, margherita pizza and barbeque chicken, and are all certified by the GFCO.
Cali’flour.
Cali’flour is a cauliflower-based, gluten free frozen pizza brand that is low carb and keto-friendly. The brand makes a pepperoni, classic cheese, artisan margherita and supreme veggie pies that you can find in almost any frozen food aisle.
Etalia.
Etalia frozen pizza offers a fresh-rising crust, which is reminiscent of frozen pizzas before you went gluten-free and we love to see it. When the pizza bakes, the bread gets soft and chewy, making it feel like an artisan pizza straight from your own oven. A great indication of a good frozen pizza is if it looks delicious even when its’ uncooked, and Etalia aces that test. The margherita tastes just like a wood-fired pizza and we are absolutely smitten.
Sabatasso’s.
Sabatasso’s gluten-free frozen pizza is topped with a mountain of cheese and bakes beautifully in the oven. There are no weird tastes or textures, something that can feel familiar with other gluten-free brands, and it’s super reasonably priced for a specialty pizza at under $7 a pop. The four cheese will satisfy your craving, for sure.
Cappello’s.
Capello’s pizza crusts differ from the norm when it comes to gluten-free frozen pizza – they are made with almond flour! This tasty pizza pie is certified gluten-free, grain-free and soy-free, so that means it’s probably calorie free, too, right? They offer two crust styles including naked crust and keto crust as well as a keto cheese pizza and a pepperoni pizza.
Conclusion
If gluten is a serious thing for you, be sure to read the labels and check all ingredients to confirm the pizza is right for you! That said, it’s so nice to know that there are frozen gluten-free frozen pizza brands out there that prioritize your sensitivities AND don’t cross-contaminate!
